Worldwide Social Media Usage Trends in 2012

There's absolutely no doubt that social networks continue to play an increasingly important part in many people's lives. EMarketer predicts there will be a massive 1.43 billion social network users in 2012, representing a 19.2 percent increase over 2011 figures.
At some point we're bound to reach a social media saturation point, but it doesn't look like that point will arrive any time soon.
Social media usage varies from place to place and from one demographic to the next. A Pew Internet survey found that 65 percent of Internet users in the U.S. used social networking sites, up from 61 percent the previous year. Sixty-one percent of adults under 30 reported that they used a social networking site at least once on a typical day while daily usage among Internet users aged between 50-64 rose sharply, from 20 percent in 2010 to 32 percent last year.
“The graying of social networking sites continues, but the oldest users are still far less likely to be making regular use of these tools,” said Senior Research Specialist and report co-author Mary Madden. “While seniors are testing the waters, many Baby Boomers are beginning to make a trip to the social media pool part of their daily routine.”
Alongside personal usage, more businesses are taking advantage of the benefits social media sites can offer.
A joint study by global management consulting firm Booz & Company and Buddy Media found that 96 percent of companies surveyed would be increasing their investments in social media. Advertising and promotions, PR, and customer services were listed as the main uses or benefits but other uses such as market research and recruitment were reported. (Also see "The 5 Ws of Social Media Marketing: Industry Survey & Insights [Study]" for more social media marketing trends from Social Media Examiner.)

Facebook: "The Social Network"

The inexorable rise of social media might be an indisputable fact but it can be easier to track social media trends than predict them. It's not that long ago, after all, that MySpace was not only the most popular social networking site worldwide but also, according to Hitwise, the single most visited site in the U.S., even beating the behemoth that is Google into second place.
These days it is Facebook that, as the 2010 movie title suggests, is the social network. The site overtook MySpace on Alexa's listings in 2008 and hasn't looked back since.
Facebook boasts more than 845 million active users and a 2011 comScore report revealed there were only seven countries worldwide in which Facebook did not rule the roost. That figure tumbled to six in December however, when Facebook overtook Orkut as the leading social networking destination in the vast and still emerging Brazilian market.
“Despite the cultural affinity for social media, Facebook adoption had traditionally lagged in the market,” said Alex Banks, comScore managing director for Brazil “That has all changed in the past year, during which the site has tripled in audience size as engagement has grown sevenfold to assume the leadership position in the market.”
At least part of the secret of Facebook's success is the fact that it manages to present itself as both a global and local service. Users know that it has a true global presence, potentially linking them to other users all over the world. At the same time, localized language settings and content allow the site to be seen as a number of interlinked local communities.

Local Differences

One rather large gap in Facebook's global domination comes in the shape of China. The site is officially banned in China but local sites are massive within the market.
An eMarketer report lists TencentQZone at the front of the pack in China, while TencentWeibo, SinaWeibo, and Renren also have significant market shares. With the Internet itself not expected to reach a majority of China's vast population until 2015, Qzone may even be able to overhaul Facebook's active user figures without having to expand very much outside Chinese borders.
Elsewhere, Russia is dominated by Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki, sites that are also quickly expanding into other Eastern European countries.
Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Poland were the other countries listed by comScore as the territories where Facebook doesn’t command the greatest market share but even in its own back yard, Facebook shouldn't rest on its laurels.

adCenter to Add Broad Match Modifier

As they promised they would, the adCenter product team continues to deliver important improvements at an impressive pace. People are beginning to be given the heads up on the imminent release for the U.S. market of another feature that brings adCenter even closer to Google AdWords parity: Broad Match Modifier.
Not only does this feature provide advertisers with much better control over the sometimes erratic behavior of the broad matching algorithms, but if this works anything like AdWords Modified Broad Match (and it should), then we should expect significant improvements on both Average Positions but also CTR, which translates into more clicks and conversions.

What is Broad March Modifier (BMM)?

BMM allows advertisers to specify which terms within any given keyword must be present within the search query for the ad to qualify for auction. This is achieved by putting a PLUS symbol in front of the terms we want to qualify explicitly as "modified".
For example, let's imagine an advertiser bids on the broad match keyword Blue Acme Widgets, but our advertiser realizes loads of traffic is for the search query Blue BigCo Widgets. The trouble is, our advertiser doesn't sell BigCo widgets, so this traffic is wasted. Using modified broad match, our advertiser could make sure the competing brands Acme and BigCo will not be considered interchangeable by the adCenter broad match algorithms by simply adding the PLUS sign in front of ACME.
Blue +Acme Widgets
And if our advertiser only sells them in blue, then she could also limit the broad matching on Blue, like so:
+Blue +Acme Widgets

How To Make the Most of BMM?

1. Go Beyond Phrase & Exact

Savvy advertisers typically start campaigns with exact match keywords, slowly adding phrase match once they feel the exact match strategy is working. But many never move on to adding very many broad match keywords because broad match is inherently an unpredictable black box which of course carries a lot of risk.
The introduction of BMM by adCenter means advertisers gain a lot more control over how the matching algorithm will work with their broad match keywords. If you're one of those advertisers who has been scared of the seemingly random behavior of broad match, this is a new opportunity to move the needle on your existing campaigns.

2. Build Out Keyword Lists & Improve Bidding strategy

Since simply using Broad Match can be quite risky, many advertisers have not had the chance (or the budget!) to use it as a means to uncover search queries that work and to add them as new phrase and exact match keywords. But with the introduction of BMM, it is now much easier to try this very effective strategy in a controlled environment.
For example, if you sell Blue Widgets by many different brands, but only blue (no other colour), and only widgets (it's your specialty!), then you don't want to broad match blue widgets for fear of matching for irrelevant queries. But with BMM+Blue +Widgets will probably uncover opportunities like Discount Blue Acme Widgets - add Discount Blue Widgets as Broad Match with BMM (+Discount +Blue +Widgets) BigCo Widgets in Blue - add this search query as phrase match and exact match Where can I find fake blue widgets - add "fake" as negative

3. Protect Brand Terms

One important use of BMM is for those advertisers who need to be concerned with the matching of brand terms.
  • Regulated Industries: Some industries are regulated and prohibit the use of brand terms in certain cases. This is the case for the pharmaceutical industry for example. BMM allows those advertisers to gain the benefit of using broad match to uncover new opportunities all the while controlling when adCenter matches queries to brand terms in their keywords.
  • Prevent Unwanted Matches to Competitor Brand Queries: Your company is called Acme, your competitor is BigCo. Often, adCenter will treat both brands as synonyms and your ad will come up when someone searches for BigCo. For many advertisers, this can be problematic. You can prevent this by adding BMM to your brand term. The same solution applies in the case of a retailer who only carries Acme widgets.

Brands on Facebook have some work to do in helping fans understand their message on the new Timeline brand pages. Users find some elements confusing, such as unexpanded apps and the “See More” breaks in content. Others, like cover images, may not be as important as you would think.
A new eye tracking study by SimpleUsability, in which they play back activity to the user and have them recall their thought process, highlights a number of challenges and opportunities for brands using Facebook as a marketing channel. As of March 31, all brand pages have changed over to the new Timeline layout; some early adopters have had a month or more to learn their way around the new layout. Others are just getting started. Whether it’s brand new to you, or you feel fairly comfortable, a few of these insights and tips may surprise you.
Each key insight is followed by a tip enclosed in quotes, which comes directly from SimpleUsability’s report.

1. Facebook Brand Pages Must be Kept Current

Tip: “Page managers should consider how promotions, competitions and themed content can be contained within a specific timeframe that doesn’t require excessive scrolling.”
It can be challenging, especially for smaller companies, to commit to posting new content on a regular basis. However, study authors found that users would not scroll back farther than one month to view content. Users became confused by breaks in content, where Facebook reloads additional posts; they thought they had come to the end of the Timeline or simply weren’t willing to wait for older content to load.

2. Cover Images are Perceived as Advertisements, Largely Ignored

facebook-timeline-eye-tracking-2
Tip: “Brands should make full use of new functionality – such as the Timeline and cover Image – to engage users, being aware that the latter has to be used imaginatively and not just considered to be a Facebook ‘billboard.’”
Timeline cover images are tricky. In an earlier study on Twitter brand pages, which have a similar banner-like cover image at the top, users were confused because the image is not clickable. In addition, Facebook has stringent rules about what cover images may and may not contain, such as no contact information or calls to action.
In their study, SimpleUsability observed that most users disregarded the cover photo and profile image, even when they were creatively designed to work together. They quickly scrolled down to get past the top of the page, which they saw as ad space. Said one user, “I think timeline like that works much better for a personal than a product page, I just think because it is a banner with a main picture, it just looks like advertising.”
The takeaway? You’re going to have to work really hard to convey a message in this space; it may be more sensible to use cover image space for branding and leave the promotion and calls to action for the content section of the Timeline.

3. Users Want to Know More About Your Company

facebook-timeline-eye-tracking-3
Tip: “It is worth incorporating your company’s history into the timeline.”
Users were observed taking interest in the “About” section of brand pages and shared that company information was often difficult to find on corporate websites. They were interested in learning more about the company’s history, yet some were confused when information appeared that seemed to predate Facebook.
Said one user, “Back in the 1990s there shouldn’t be anything there because there wasn’t Facebook then.” Another user said they would explore the historical information available about the company over a period of years, if it were available.

4. Relationships and Friends’ Interactions: More Important Than Ever

Tip: “Brands should focus on nurturing positive brand mentions wherever they may be on Facebook.”
Whether friends Liked and interacted with a page was a part of users’ decision to Like it themselves. This wasn’t absolute though; if users had no interest at all in the page, they were not influenced to change their mind because friends Liked it. However, if they had any interest at all, friend activity became a factor.
Underneath the box that shows which friends Like the page, there may also be an activity box displaying friend activity around the brand name. This doesn’t necessarily mean the friend posted directly on the Page. They may have mentioned the brand in a status update or photo comment. If this activity feed showed recent friend activity, users were more likely to interact with it.
According to one user, “The comment bit was there, but it was from last year, if it had been more recent I would have probably commented [on it].” The takeaway for brands: stay on top of brand mentions and let no interaction go unreturned.

5. Users are Confused by Timeline Elements; Brands Must Educate and Offer Guidance

facebook-timeline-eye-tracking-4
Tip: “Brands must focus on helping fans understand the new page layouts and indicate the availability of new content and functionality. Unless this barrier is overcome interaction (which is now key to increases a page’s community) may be depressed.”
Users found a number of Timeline brand page elements confusing or missed them entirely: the small arrow indicating collapsed apps went unnoticed, pinned posts were not differentiated enough, the “About” link and company description were difficult to find.
SimpleUsability MD Guy Redwood said it “is clear that the average user doesn’t fully understand the new layout, or interact with it in the way intended. This will likely change over time, but as the mechanics of obtaining ‘Likes’ has become more difficult for brands, they now need to drive engagement more than ever. Page editors no longer have the ability to set targeted landing tabs or applications for non-fans. In the past you could direct people onto a particular tab to encourage likes or interaction with a promotion.”
He advocates user education as a part of the social media marketing strategy: “I would encourage brands to help users with the transition and explain what is on offer in terms of functionality and content – you cannot simply assume they already know.”

Facebook Timeline: Unique Challenges & Opportunities for Brands

Facebook is constantly tweaking and updating their platform, as we’ve seen over the years with personal profiles. Expect the same with brand pages, as advertisers and users offer feedback for Facebook to consider.
As Facebook seems poised to continue their reign as the most heavily populated channel for social media marketing, brands need to tie brand page activity back to goals and measurable outcomes more than ever. The spaghetti approach, throwing time and money at it to see what sticks, simply won’t work. While Facebook’s new Insights (analytics) have taken some flack, Google put out new social reports recently; the two systems combined offer a far better overall picture than either on their own.

4 SEO Recommendations to Target the Long Tail

While the practice of search engine optimization (SEO) is constantly evolving, one thing remains unchanged: clients always want to rank for a priority list of marquee, highly competitive terms. That's understandable. What is problematic is that they usually base their conclusions around how successful their SEO program is by how well they rank for those highly competitive terms.
While it should be the goal of any website to rank highly for competitive terms, the real gauge of targeted SEO success is overall/total search traffic. Some would argue success is determined by conversions and revenue, but many of the factors that contribute to conversions fall outside the scope of SEO (messaging, competitive pricing, page design, and layout, etc.).
One interesting thing that I have seen working with enterprise companies, usually the lion's share of search traffic comes from "long tail" traffic and not from "fat head" keywords. This is true even when the company ranks well for the “fat head” terms. Therefore, I thought it would be valuable to briefly define what long tail traffic is, explain why it is so important, and detail a couple techniques that may help you increase your long tail traffic.

What is Long Tail Search Traffic?

Rather than beat a dead horse, let me quote Ian Lurie, who offers a good, succinct definition of long tail search traffic:
"Specific, niche search phrases, usually more than 2 words in length, that offer a low competition, low search volume and high searcher intent."
Lurie’s article goes into a lot of detail about what the long tail is.

Why is Long Tail Search Traffic so Important

My favorite story that illustrates the concept is about one of the sub-brands of a former clients. This client sold software. They had a well-recognized name for their software that was different than their company name (for the purposes of this article, we’ll call it Dive Bomber Software).
This Dive Bomber software was one of many different software products they produced. So in evaluating which software titles were receiving the most traffic and should be prioritized within the context of our campaign, we analyzed the total monthly traffic generated by each of the software titles.
The phrase “Dive Bomber software” only generated about 300 users a month. Not very impressive compared to other titles. However, when we analyzed the long tail permutations of Dive Bomber software, (e.g., “Dive Bomber software version 1.3”), we found that there were more than 20,000 related searches a month! That obviously changed our perspective on how important Dive Bomber software was.
The same trend is evident when analyzing the traffic patterns of our other enterprise clients, many of whom have significant rankings for highly competitive words. Even with the advent of instant search, auto-fill, spell correction, and other mechanisms that had an effect on reducing the number of long tail searches, the majority of keyword traffic for most of my clients (for both brand and non-brand related searches) are based on long tail permutations of their targeted keywords. This is why targeting long tail traffic is so important.
So with that understanding, let's discuss some SEO practices that can effectively help target the long tail.

1. Understand the Keyword Landscape

Be aware of the common long tail permutations. Understanding the most popular permutations of your competitive keywords, as well as common patterns people use, helps you to optimize around those keywords and patterns.
Using your own analytics data, PPC data, internal search data, competitive intelligence and tools like Google AdWords Keyword Tool and Wordtracker to define your keyword landscape is a good first step. Understanding patterns can be important.
For example, if you sell T-Shirts and you see that there is some search traffic around "red t shirts", it stands to reason that you would also optimize around all of the other colors that you sell. It may warrant creating a page about “Red T Shirts” if you have the inventory to support that kind of a page.
Alternatively, you may find that just adding the different color names to your high ranking page about T-shirts does the trick. In many cases, adding long tail keyword permutations to body copy of a page that ranks highly for a fat head term can produce significant results. It just depends on how competitive the long tail permutations are.

2. Create Meaningful, Descriptive Page Titles

I have never been a fan of page titles that are limited to 65 characters in length. While it's true that only the first 65 characters will be displayed in search results, it is equally true that keywords found after the 65th character will be recognized and counted in the ranking algorithms of major search engines.
Therefore, if I place less important words (long tail permutations for example) after the 65th character with the understanding that I need to capture the users attention in those first 65 characters, I am able to target more keyword permutations as well as give the search engines more information about what the page is really about.
As long as the page titles read well and convey appropriate and relevant information, they are useful for both users and engines. I typically make my page titles about 8 to 13 words, ensure that they read intelligently and rarely ever use the same word more than once. Using this method, I have never been flagged in Google Webmaster Tools for having too long of a title (nor I have been flagged for having too short of a title).
Here are some more tips on how to write title tags.

3. Infuse Your Content & Internal Links With Keyword Variations

Whatever long tail keyword permutations you want to target need to exist in the content of the page that you want ranked for those permutations. Additionally, it's wise to vary the internal link text that points to any given page.
Including a variety of internal site links with different long tail keywords pointing to the page that targets those keywords is good practice. They should be linked from other pages on your site that are relevant to those specific long tail keywords.
Keep in mind that only the link text from the first link found in source code between any two pages is counted in Google's algorithm. Any pages that are linked to from your global navigation template won't benefit from these variations found in content because the global navigation links will usually be found first in the source code. It may still be worth doing however from a user experience perspective.

4. Leverage User Generated Content

Find creative ways to infuse your pages with user-generated content (comments, reviews, etc.). This type of content naturally targets long tail keyword permutations. Users typically will include many long tail variations as they make relevant comments about your page content.
User-generated content can be an amazing source of long tail keywords including model numbers, color variations, specific applications, or problem issues. And it helps to distinguish your content and makes it more valuable to users and engines.

Conclusion

These are some of the tactics that can help you successfully target long tail traffic. Hopefully they provide you with some actionable recommendations that will help you increase the amount of total targeted, organic search traffic to your projects.
